If you stood at the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu crater this week, you wouldn't see lava. You'd see steam, a blackened crater floor, and a lot of quiet. That's the strange part about Kīlauea right now.
It isn't over. It's just holding its breath.
On July 29 at 2:36 AM HST, Episode 52 ended. According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Kīlauea is not erupting right now - the summit is in a pause. But tiltmeters around the caldera are already showing reinflation. Magma is pooling again, just a mile or so below the surface. HVO's latest forecast says Episode 53 will likely arrive between August 6 and 14.
This on-off cycle has been going on for 19 months.
Not Your Typical Volcano
People picture volcanoes as tall, cone-shaped mountains that explode. Kīlauea is the opposite.
It is a shield volcano. Over hundreds of thousands of years, thousands of thin flows of runny basaltic lava have poured out and built a broad, low shield, like a warrior's shield laid on the ground. The lava is low in silica, so it doesn't trap gas and blow up. It flows.
Kīlauea sits on a hot spot - a deep plume of heat fixed in the mantle while the Pacific Plate slowly slides over it to the northwest. That hot spot is the reason the Hawaiian Islands exist in a line, and why Kīlauea has an almost endless supply of magma.
The action today is all at the summit, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Not on the lower rift zones where homes were lost in 2018.
The Breathing Pattern That Scientists Are Tracking
HVO volcanologists don't call this a continuous eruption anymore. They call it episodic fountaining.
Here is how it actually works:
1. Inflation: Magma fills the shallow reservoirs under Halemaʻumaʻu. The ground swells outward. You can measure it in microradians on a tiltmeter. To the instrument, the volcano is inhaling. 2. Fountaining: Pressure gets too high. A fissure opens on the crater floor. Lava shoots up - in recent episodes over 500 feet, sometimes over 1,000 feet in the strongest events in early 2025. It builds a cinder cone and lava lake in a matter of hours. 3. Deflation: Once the gas and lava vent, pressure drops. The ground sinks. The eruption stops. The cycle resets.
This happened 47 times during the famous Puʻuʻōʻō eruption from 1983 to 1986. Kīlauea just beat that record. Episode 48 on June 1, 2026 officially made this the longest episodic fountaining sequence ever recorded at Kīlauea, and we are now at 52 episodes.
Each episode only lasts hours to a couple of days, followed by days to weeks of quiet. On June 1, as Episode 48 was ending, HVO recorded 53 small earthquakes under the south rim as the plumbing system adjusted.
Should You Be Worried? Vog, Pele's Hair, and Park Closures
Because this eruption is inside a closed national park caldera, lava is not threatening towns like Pahoa or Volcano Village. The real impact is in the air.
Vog: When sulfur dioxide from the eruption hits sun and moisture, it creates volcanic smog. On Kona wind days, vog can blanket the whole west side of the Big Island and even drift to Maui and Oahu. If you have asthma, you will feel it.
Pele's Hair and Tephra: Those towering fountains freeze in the air. Wind carries thin, golden strands of volcanic glass named for Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. It looks beautiful, but it is glass. It will irritate skin, eyes, and catchments. Rangers will often close the closest overlooks when SO2 spikes.

Why Geologists Can't Look Away
For science, this is a gift. Never before have we had this many high-quality, back-to-back episodes with modern instruments.
Every episode gives HVO a new dataset: InSAR satellite images showing exactly how the ground deformed, continuous gas readings, thermal camera footage, drone maps of how thick the lava flows are getting inside Halemaʻumaʻu.
Forecasting models have gotten shockingly good. Back in early June, HVO predicted Episode 49 would fall between June 12-15 - and it happened on June 14. That kind of short-term forecasting was impossible ten years ago.
The big question now is what Kīlauea will do next. Will it keep this metronome-like rhythm into late 2026? Will it switch back to a continuous lava lake like it had from 2008-2018? Or will the magma find a new path down the East Rift Zone?
No one knows. But the ground is tilting upward again. The volcano is inhaling.
