​In a shocking turn of events that has drawn nationwide attention, prosecutors in Arizona have announced that the parents of an 18-month-old toddler—who was mistakenly declared dead and later discovered alive in a hospital morgue—will not face criminal child abuse charges.

​The Near-Fatal Drowning Incident

​The traumatic series of events began in February 2026 at a residence in Gilbert, Arizona. The 18-month-old toddler, Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino, slipped away unnoticed and fell into the family’s backyard swimming pool.

​Upon realizing what had happened, his panicked parents immediately pulled him from the water, performed CPR, and called emergency services. Paramedics rushed the toddler to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where emergency room staff initiated intensive resuscitation efforts.

​Despite prolonged attempts to revive him, attending medical personnel concluded that the child had passed away. At 6:20 PM that evening, an emergency room physician officially declared the toddler dead.

​Ignored Warnings and a Miraculous Discovery

​What followed was a harrowing sequence of events that left the family traumatized. Following the doctor’s formal declaration, the child’s mother and a nurse on duty reportedly noticed subtle signs that the boy might still be breathing. They alerted the attending physician, but their observations were dismissed, with medical staff attributing the movements to post-mortem reflex spasms.

​The toddler was subsequently transferred to the hospital’s morgue facility. Nearly five hours later, around 11:30 PM, representatives from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived to collect the body for a routine autopsy.
